Holiday Weight Gain
This really is the most wonderful time of the year! Being a foodie myself, I love it when all of the pumpkin treats abound and there seems to be a never-ending supply of cookies coming from somewhere. Food is the upside. Weight gain is the down side. This is especially true if you’ve just quit smoking. You might be snacking to help you get through cravings and you might be eating more because food just tastes better after you quit smoking.
If you love nibbling on sweets like me or if you love an extra helping of gravy on everything, it’s probably time to watch what you’re eating. Otherwise, you could end up gaining unwanted pounds. Here are some tips that will help you to navigate the Thanksgiving leftovers and other treats that will confront you at upcoming holiday parties and gatherings:
- Keep healthy snacks on hand. If you like something crunchy, make sure you have celery and carrot sticks and apples available. You also might want to keep grapes handy. You can even freeze them for a different kind of snack. Slice up an apple and, to keep the pieces from turning brown, put a little lemon juice on them.
- Eat fresh fruit instead of just drinking fruit juice. Some kinds of juice can be high in sugar and calories.
- Drink a full glass of water before each meal. Water is filling and very good for you. Not only will you sit down at the table feeling less hungry, you’ll stay hydrated.
- Skip dessert. If you crave something sweet, have a cup of low-calorie hot chocolate.
- Occasional cravings aren’t always the same thing as hunger. Just as with smoking, the craving will pass whether you eat or not.
- If you’re going to a party, have a healthy snack to fill up before you go. You’ll be less tempted to reach for whatever high-calorie goodies might be served up on a tray.
Don’t deny yourself everything. Have a small portion of your favorite treat on occasion. A few bites instead of a full portion will often satisfy you and can help you maintain control of your weight.
Remember to keep moving! Eating extra calories isn’t the only thing that puts on weight—inactivity also packs on the pounds. Couple your smart eating with adding extra activity into your day, such as taking the stairs whenever you can, taking an extra walk at lunch time or raking those leaves that might be lying around. Exercise can also help reduce cravings to smoke so you have even more reason to get out there and move!
