Great American Smokeout
Every year on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, the American Cancer Society organizes the Great American Smokeout. This is a day that smokers are encouraged to quit, even if only for a day. If you have joined FFS Online to quit for this special day, we welcome you. You are doing the best possible thing to protect your health and you're in the right place to receive the tools and encouragement you need to stay smokefree for life. With the tools and support of this program, we think you'll stay quit a lot longer than a day. If you keep trying, you can quit for good.
Overcoming an addiction to nicotine is a gift you give to yourself. It's a lifestyle change that gives you freedom. Freedom from the bonds of always having to keep tobacco on hand, freedom to go wherever you want in smokefree places, freedom to save the money you would spend on tobacco and the freedom from the threat of smoking-related illnesses. Focusing on all the things you gain by being smokefree will help you stay on a smokefree path.
If you have found this new freedom for yourself, share the FFS Online website with your friends and family. The example you set for them may encourage them to try quitting as well. They'll come to realize that if you can do it, they can too! Talk about how the program has worked for you, the activities you have tried, the plan you created for yourself and the success that you've had. Let them know that when they are ready, FFS Online is here for them. Learn how to help others quit smoking by reviewing the handout in the program since, as you know, not everyone's path to quitting is the same.
We are hearing more and more about how members of our Armed Forces often start to smoke while deployed and come home addicted to nicotine. Many people reach for tobacco during stressful times in their lives to cope, but there are other ways to cope with stress that are much better for the mind and body. If you are a veteran and want to quit, we are here for you. Please join our Fighters for Freedom Message Board to share your opinions and experiences with fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. Thank you for your dedicated service to our country and the many sacrifices that you and your families make in the name of freedom.
As you go through this week:
- Focus on what you gain by being smokefree and not on what you are giving up. This approach helps you feel more in control and less like a victim during your journey.
- Continue to add to your list of reasons to quit.
- Take some time to listen to the relaxation exercises.
- Give and receive support on the Message Boards, and let us know what you are gaining by being smokefree.
