Spring has definitely sprung in most areas of the country giving us an opportunity to increase our physical activity. Making a lifestyle change to increase your physical activity actually improves your chances of staying smokefree for good.
Health experts recommend that we get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week. We don’t even have to get 30 minutes all at one time. If you are able to fit in little chunks of time during the day, before you know it you’ll have racked up your 30 minutes. Even taking a two minute break, several times during the day to walk briskly can count!
Moderate-intensity activities are equal in effort to walking a mile within 15-20 minutes. Some of these activities include things like riding a bicycle, dancing, gardening, golfing, hiking, playing actively with children, playing volleyball, vacuuming, and washing a car. Many of these activities also get us outside where we can breathe fresh air.
When you think of increasing your physical activity, think back to the things you used to enjoy as a child. Did you like to ride a bike? Jump rope? Rollerblade? Finding an activity you enjoy will increase the likelihood that you’ll stick with it.
This government website lists more than 100 ways of being active: www.smallstep.gov. It’s chock-full of good information about increasing your activity. Noodle around on the site and I bet you’ll learn something new.
Don’t let weather play a role in robbing you of getting in your physical activity. Walking is one of the safest, easiest and least expensive ways of getting some activity. You can do that indoors or outdoors, no matter what the weather.
Post what you plan to do to increase your physical activity on the Message Boards, if you’re in the Premium program. Try to increase your activity every day this week by 10 minutes, next week by 20 minutes, and the week after that by 30 minutes. The next thing you know you’ll be in the habit of staying physically active. I think I’ll go put on some music and dance…
Until next time, I’ll see you on the Message Boards! :) Mary Ella
Don’t forget: If you’re in the Premium program and want help fast on the Message Boards, put “HELP NOW” in the subject line of your post. If you’re looking to offer help, watch for those, “HELP NOW” posts and alert your other FFS Online buddies friends to offer some assistance as well.
