Joining After Quitting
If you joined the FFS Online program after you quit smoking, welcome! This program can help you maintain your smokefree goal. Even though you’ve already quit, we still suggest that you read through the lessons in Modules 1-3 and the first two lessons of Module 4. After that, the lessons will be more applicable to your situation. The lessons build on one another and, although the activities in the earlier modules may not be as pertinent to you now, the rest of the program will make more sense if you’re familiar with those earlier lessons.
Would you like to talk with an expert about how this smokefree journey is going for you? Then take advantage of our Lung HelpLine. This service is free to the public and counselors are on duty from 8 a.m. until midnight Eastern Time, seven days a week. Registered nurses, respiratory therapists and smoking cessation counselors are available to answer your questions and talk you through a particularly bad urge curve. Call 1-800-548-8252 for this support.
Weight gain is a concern that many people have when quitting. Of those who gain weight, most will gain less than ten pounds. If you find yourself going beyond that, you may be reaching for too many high calorie foods and/or not getting enough physical activity. Attending an upcoming Super Bowl party? Keep these tips in mind to control your weight while also staying smokefree:
- Eat a low-calorie snack such as an apple or some veggies before the party to help curb your appetite.
- Aim to make 30 percent of your food intake either fruits or vegetables that day. Think about offering to bring a veggie tray or fruit salad to the party.
- If you’re going to drink alcohol, alternate between drinking water and alcoholic beverages. You’ll fill yourself up while drinking fewer total calories. Choosing light beers instead of regular ones will save another 50 calories per bottle or can.
The American Lung Association will release its 2013 State of Tobacco Control® report on Wednesday, January 16. This report grades each state on tobacco prevention and control spending, smokefree air laws, cigarette taxes and cessation coverage. Find out how your state measures up by visiting www.stateoftobaccocontrol.org.
If you’re quitting this week, reach out for help. Call your buddy, ask your nonsmoking friends for support or post messages for help on the Message Boards. If you’re one of those veteran members reaching back to offer help, thank you. You make this program a strong one. As others reached out to you, you’re giving back by reaching out to those who need your strength now.
I’ll see you on the Message Boards! :-) Mary Ella
Don’t forget: If you're in the Premium program and want help fast on the Message Boards, put "HELP NOW" in the subject line of your post. If you're looking to offer help, watch for those, "HELP NOW" posts and alert your other FFS Online buddies to offer some assistance as well.
