Just Do It!
That old slogan “Just Do It” really says it all. It doesn’t matter what you do to get active, it’s just important that you carve out some time for yourself to do something, anything that will get you moving. Now that it’s summer, it’s a great time to get active!
If you have not started a plan to increase your physical activity, I urge you to just do it. Think about the various ways you could be active for 10-minute intervals. Perhaps you could:
- take a quick walk around the block or your office
- ride your bike
- walk up a few flights of stairs
- jump rope
Maybe you haven’t done those things in years, but if you used to enjoy them, it could be time to start one of these activities again.
Make an appointment with yourself in your calendar for some physical activity. You might be more likely to actually do it if it’s written down. Another way to stick with it is to work out with a friend, spouse or other family member. If you’re committed to doing something at a certain time with someone else, that person may be able to talk you out of skipping if you feel tempted to be a couch potato.
If you prefer to work out in a gym, pick one that is on your regular daily route. If you have to go too far out of your way, it gets easy to talk yourself out of the gym.
If the thought of working out in public makes your skin crawl, stay at home to get some exercise. Get some light weights and check out a couple of DVDs or online videos. Aerobic dancing is a great cardiovascular workout and if you try it for a few weeks, you’ll find your energy level increasing. If you find a DVD or video that you really like, talk about it on the Message Boards.
Another tip is to try a variety of activities. You could walk one day, go for a bike ride later that week, play golf on Saturday and then work in the garden on Sunday. The trick is to stick with what you enjoy! If you don’t like a certain activity, don’t force yourself to do it – find something else that you enjoy!
Before you close this email, make that activity appointment in your calendar. Plan to do something within the next 24 hours that will get you moving more than you have in the last couple of weeks. Just do it!
