Mary Ella’s Weekly Message
December 31, 2012
Every New Year, it’s time to reflect on the year gone by and anticipate with hope the year to come. You may be starting 2013 smokefree for the first time in many years. What a tremendous accomplishment. You should be congratulated over and over again for the hard work you have put into creating a new lifestyle for yourself. As you enter this year smokefree, what are you doing to reward yourself? It’s important to reinforce your positive behavior with some sort of reward—and it doesn’t even have to cost anything.
You may be entering the New Year with a resolution to become smokefree. If that’s the case, welcome to Freedom From Smoking® (FFS) Online. You will find research-based information and tools to help you and plenty of support from your fellow participants on the Message Boards. You may have been thinking about quitting for a while or you might have tried to quit before and are feeling a little anxious about it. That’s a natural feeling. Take some time to think about what you will do to make this quit attempt different. The FFS Online program does not start with quitting but instead helps you to build a solid foundation and design a plan to become smokefree.
If you’re new to FFS Online, start at the beginning. Read through the Program Overview and then the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). If you quit smoking before you found your way to FFS Online, we suggest you read through the lessons in Modules 1-4 anyway, as they build on one another, and then begin your journey in earnest with Contracts, Rewards and Overcoming Slips in Module 4.
Although FFS Online is self-paced, you will do yourself a favor by taking your time going through the lessons in each module. The recommended pace of the program is addressed in Question 3 in the FAQs. It’s tempting to want to rush through the information and jump right in but that doesn’t allow you time to process information, complete the recommended exercises or post to the Message Boards.
When you have questions, reach out to your fellow participants on the Message Boards. You’ll find that others respond quickly, sincerely and supportively. It takes a little practice to navigate your way around the site but keep at it. Continue to press buttons and click on links and before you know it, you’ll be a pro—one who is offering advice to other newcomers.
This week practice the three “rules” of the program:
- Read all of the lessons in each Module,
- Complete all of the suggested activities, and
- Give and receive support on the Message Boards.
Have a wonderful and smokefree New Year. I’ll see you on the Message Boards! :-) Mary Ella
Don’t forget: If you're in the Premium program and want help fast on the Message Boards, put "HELP NOW" in the subject line of your post. If you're looking to offer help, watch for those, "HELP NOW" posts and alert your other FFS Online buddies to offer some assistance as well.
