Spring is in the air!
Spring officially starts this week! Most of us look forward to the longer days and love to see flowers and trees blooming. As the weather gets warmer, spring gives us the opportunity to spend more time outside. Are you taking advantage of the extended daylight and warmer temperatures by enjoying more physical activity? This is a great time to begin or extend a walking program, take a bike ride or spend some time doing yard work.
As the starkness of winter turns to spring, it reminds me of the evolution of a lifestyle change like becoming smokefree. We give up the old for the new but it doesn’t happen overnight. The calendar will tell us on March 20th that it’s spring, but that doesn’t mean that all spring flowers will bloom or that all the trees will have their leaves that day. As seasons evolve, so does a new lifestyle. It takes time to come into the fullness of a season and it takes time to adapt to a new lifestyle.
As your lifestyle evolves to being smokefree, it often helps to change other areas of your life at the same time. Adding physical activity, eating right and learning to cope better with stress will help you to remain smokefree. One of the ways to cope with stress is by learning to breathe deeply and relax. The Relaxation Exercises in the program will help you do that. Download the exercises if you haven’t already done so and give each of them a try. You may find that one exercise becomes a favorite. A good way to use them is by playing them right before you go to sleep. You might even fall asleep before the exercise is finished. For this reason, it’s important to never use the relaxation exercises while driving!
While winter turns to spring, remind yourself that lifestyle changes evolve and be patient with yourself as you go through this change. This week, be good to yourself and commit to doing these things:
- Download the Relaxation Exercises.
- Listen to each of the Relaxation Exercises at least three times.
- Post about the Relaxation Exercises on the Message Boards.
- Take a brisk, 10 minute walk, three times per day for three days.
- Drink lots of water—at least eight 8-oz. glasses per day.
- Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a reward for doing a great job!
