The average gain after quitting smoking is about seven pounds. If you find yourself gaining more than that, it’s probably due to not enough physical activity or taking in too many calories. The good news is that there are simple things you can do to watch your calorie intake and increase your physical activity.
Winter is usually a time when we want to hibernate from the cold weather and we tend to slow down our activity. One solution is to exercise indoors, whether at your local gym, in your home or power-walking through the mall. A few easy ways to work in extra steps in your day are to:
- Park farther away from the door to where you’re going. When you’re taking those extra steps, picture me patting you on the back!
- Take the stairs whenever you can. Stair climbing is a great aerobic activity. Fifteen minutes of stair climbing is about the same as jogging a mile.
- If you find yourself in a big box store, walk the perimeter with purpose. Then do your shopping.
If you joined the FFS Online program after you quit smoking, welcome! This program can help you maintain your smokefree status. We suggest that you read through the lessons in Modules 1–3, and the first two lessons of Module 4. After that, the lessons will be more applicable to your situation. The lessons build on one another and, although the activities in the earlier Modules may not be pertinent to you now, the rest of the program will make more sense if you know what we refer to in later lessons in the final Modules.
On January 20, the American Lung Association will release its annual State of Tobacco Control 2010 report. This report grades policies for tobacco prevention and control spending, smokefree air laws, cigarette taxes and cessation coverage in each state and the District of Columbia. Find out how your state measures up by visiting www.stateoftobaccocontrol.org. You can even share your own story about tobacco use on this site.
